Humans have faced many pandemic situations and were successful with the vaccines developed at that stage. Although vaccination had eradicated many pandemic diseases, countries have faced manifold problems.
Let’s consider an instance,
Polio Outbreaks in United States
In the late 1940s, polio outbreaks within the U.S. increased in frequency and infection by an average of 35,000 people per annum. In 1952, it was at the peak of 57,000 people were infected, 21,000 were paralyzed and 3145 died, most of them children. Parents were frightened to let their children go outside, especially within the summer when the virus appeared to peak. Health officials imposed quarantine on homes and towns where polio cases were diagnosed.
Vaccine Discovery
Jonas Salk and his team at the University of Pittsburgh discovered the polio vaccine in 1955. Soon after the invention of the vaccine in it faced critical shortages and a deadly contamination crisis.
The Salk vaccine was a series of injections with a deadly virus that might produce polio antibodies within the bloodstream. It was administered to the affected childrens.
But on April 24, 1955, just weeks after the primary children were vaccinated, a 7-year-old patient named Susan Pierce was affected by fever and paralysis in her left arm, an equivalent arm that was injected with the Salk vaccine. Three days later, little Susan was dead.
Tragically, after hundreds more cases of vaccine-related infections were reported nationwide, the surgeon general halted all vaccinations on May 8, 1955 until a cause might be determined.
Later Albert Sabin's oral single dose drugs were used because it is a sort of weakened virus that’s strong enough to supply antibodies, but too weak to cause a lively infection.
The shortage of Vaccine occurred because of not being aware of stocking the vaccine before it being used which lead delay on controlling the spread of polio virus among the children.
Many more crises taken place but finally vaccine eradicated the polio cases from the U.S. and other parts of the world in the year 1962.
We, Learners From History
Just like polio vaccination problems, countries have faced many problems associated with vaccination and solutions too.
During this pandemic period it has helped out to take quick decisions on vaccine productions,
-
The COVAX organization is made alongside with WHO, Its aim is to accelerate the event and manufacture of COVID-19 vaccines, and to ensure fair and equitable access for each country within the world.
-
Many industries have started their production like The Pune-based Serum Institute of India, begun manufacturing the Oxford vaccine (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19) for novel coronavirus to avoid shortages during its use.
-
As the clinical trials are increased and technological improvements the vaccination infections are reduced to a high extent.
World's 1st Vaccine For Coronavirus
Russia has become the first nation to complete clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccine on humans and registered on 11th August 2020.
The vaccine developing sustainable immunity was developed at the Center for Clinical Research on Medications at Sechenov University and in two forms of vaccine
The first vaccine, in the form of a solution for intramuscular administration.
Another vaccine, in the form of a powder for the preparation of a solution for intramuscular administration.
The Gamaleya Research Institute and the company Binnopharm are going to manufacture covid 19 vaccine and the vaccine is a two-stage injection plan which helps to have a lasting immunity. i.e. Upto two years.
In some ways, COVID-19 and polio present similar challenges. Let's hope that the way polio was eradicated with a vaccine. We may also face many problems during vaccination but COVID 19 is going to be eradicated with the vaccine and shortly we will revisit our happiest normal life.
Stay Home!! Stay safe!!
